Confused about our Web Space vs. Website Hosting?

Recently our BTInet-worthy June Newsletter was published to our customers.  Within this issue is an article titled “The End of an Era…”  From the time this issue was launched, I have received several email and phone calls from customers concerned about their Website Hosting account.  I am hoping this blog will simplify this article for you.

In 2001 BTInet subscribers automatically acquired a free 10-megabyte Web site.  Subscribers included in this free web space were Dial-Up, DSL & Fixed Wireless Internet customers.

What is Web Space?

  1. Allows you to upload file information (HTML files, image files, etc.) on the World Wide Web where it will be available at a global scale.
  2. Enables you to store various files that are not visible to website visitors but play an important role for the proper functioning of your website.

I’m confused — I have BTInet’s Basic Website hosting, is that also going away?

No.  Our Basic Website Hosting is not going anywhere.  In fact we encourage our customers to switch their information over to our Website Hosting. This will in the end give them more speed, space & functionality.  Essentially a better fit for all.

Quick Review:

Web Storage is ending in January 2011.

Basic Website Hosting – No change

Still have questions?  Feel free to email us or give us a call!

Have you answered your questions?

Within the past year, there has been an increase in the number of “phishing” scam e-mails going around the Internet in an attempt to acquire personal and account information from customers.  Concerned?  Don’t be.   BTInet is proactive to aid you in protecting your account by making some changes in regards to how you access or change your account information with us.

Today when you call our office with a billing or technical question, where protected information (such as, but not limited to: billing info, username & passwords, any changes to service, etc.) may be discussed, you will have to provide us with either your verification ID or at least one of the answers to your security question in order to identify you as one of the authorized contacts for the account.

Not sure if you answered your securities questions or know your Verification ID?  Not a problem – you can either log into your e-bill account or give our helpdesk a call and they would be happy to assist you.

As outlined in our Privacy Policy, this information will not be shared or disclosed with any party outside of BTInet and is only for identification purposes.

** Don’t forget you can add an authorized contact on your account (husband, wife, family member, business partner, etc) thus enabling that individual to obtain account information on your behalf.

I live in town, can I receive the service?

With BTInet’s numerous Wireless Towers, why can I not receive the Fixed Wireless Internet service if I live in Bismarck?

The answer is comparatively simple.  An antenna is physically attached to your home, that antenna makes connection with a signal being transmitted from our access point. The antenna pushes the signal through the Ethernet cable that is ran into your home to either your computer or a wireless router. The antenna located on your roof would need to be no more than 7-10 miles from our tower and would also need a clean line of sight to that tower. With that being said, with all of the businesses in town, there is too much interference that would block that line of sight to the tower.  Any buildings, trees, hills and etc. blocking the line of sight from the antenna to the tower will in return will give you none or very slim internet access.

Raised Tile

Within BTInet’s Tier IV data center is a floor that acts as a giant HVAC.  To be considered a Tier IV data center a minimum of a three foot deep raised floor is required

How does the raised floor work?

“We direct the cold air from the subfloor up to the front of our equipment racks through perforated tiles.  This allows us to control cooling within the data center.” says Jeremy Wittenberg; System Technician.

The two main issues that IT organizations deal with in their data centers are power consumption and cooling (Reynolds, 2008) In the design process of our new data center, we have strived to avoid those to issues by using under floor cooling which has in turn provided us with the option of using overhead cable handling space.
